Earlier this week, Montclair resident Marcia Almeida was waiting to meet with a Puerto Rican couple planning their wedding in New Jersey. The same-sex couple had heard about the civil celebrant option as a nondenominational, inclusive way to get married.

The option is unique to New Jersey.

The Celebrant Foundation & Institute’s international base – outside of Australia, where the celebrant movement originated – has been in Montclair since its launch on this continent in 2001.

People who enroll in the nonprofit institute’s training programs learn about the importance of myth, storytelling and marking milestones in life. Influences on the course include Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell.
